A Sermon on Indian Tradition

Our Civilization-1

Indian civilization was basically a vedic civilization. Vedic civilization stesses importance on the vanashrama dharma. early days of the civilization were strictly following varnashrama dharma. Ashrama dharma says one has to study for first 25 years ,during this year he has to remain a celibate. what does that mean? means refrain from sexual activity . what is it?  refraning from:

  1. looking at the women
  2. thinking about women
  3. chanting the names of the girls.
  4. talking to the girls in privacy
  5. trying to touch the women
  6. embracing the girls
  7. kissing
  8. copulation

complete refrain from above and indulging in the service of guru and study of the shastras constituted Bramhacharya.

after study one has to marry a suitable girl. suitable means one who can assist in progeny and living according to the Dharma. hence the wife is known as Dharma patni. wife for mere enjoyments shall be called as bhogapatni. later does not contribute to once spiritual upliftment.

there are eight types of marriages :

  1. Father of the girl hands over his daughter to the suitable Groom to live as wife and husband.
  2. Groom is identified and invited to take the hand of the girl .
  3. Groom presents a pair of ox and cow to accept the girl married to him during yagnya .
  4. Parents of both the grrom and bride mutually decide to marry them ( this continues till date as arranged marriage)
  5. Bride accepts the Groom of her choice in swayamvar or Groom fights to win his bride
  6. Bride marries the groom of her choice by mutual love in presence of agni.(love marriage)
  7. bribing the feather of bride with wealth to marry off his daughter.
  8. forcefully marrying the women in drugged condition.

first four brings forth healthy progeny, others give rise kamaj praja , progeny who are  more interested in worldly persuits than spirituality.last two are prohibited but acceptable to tribal livings.

grahastha ashrama feeds other ashramas through their activities ,they are the fulcrum of the world.

Man does lots of sins in this birth so oblivate them He enters vanaprastha ashrama at 60 th year , lives the life of austerity in jungles , clears off his sins , practises yoga , and slowly prepares himself to be totally detached for complete conecentration on Lord.

when he reaches 75-80 he renunciates the world to enter sanyasa ashrama. there are many types of sanyasa  //dandi/tridandi/kapali/shakya/kutichaka/naga/nirgrantha/chakri/bhikshu/jeevaka/vivasa/yati/hamsa/paramahansa.

A swan when it drinks the milk ,the water in the flows out from its ears as it enjoys pure milk.In this world many action of ours are mixed with purity as well as some selfish motives. When a person consumes only aim and purity of the action unaffected by the selfish motive of others ,he is paramahamsa such person even though sanyasi lives in the society ,rest renegate to jungle.
